Where will Wayne Rooney be playing his football next season? The Manchester United striker has looked like a bit of a lost and dejected figure after the arrival of Robin van Persie at Old Trafford. There looks a lot of unwillingness by Rooney to work for his team when he been played out of position. The speculation has been growing about a summer departure for the England star and what could throw fuel on the fire is that his contract is up in the summer of 2015 and already he wants to sit down and talk about a new contract extension with Sir Alex Ferguson. The last time that happened, Wayne Rooney pretty much held Manchester United to ransom because of his super-stardom at the club. That has dissipated a bit having fallen under the shadow of Robin van Persie, so will Sir Alex Ferguson cash in on the 27 year old?
There are signs that both parties are willing to talk about his contract and status at the club, and that is why he is at odds of 2/5 to remain at Old Trafford next season. It has been somewhat of a difficult year for Rooney, highlighted by him sitting on the bench for the second leg of their Champions League quarter final match against Real Madrid. There has been issues of illness, injury and lack of fitness in general that has seen Sir Alex Ferguson not be afraid to leave him out of the line up. He really has only one decisive goal from him this season, coming against rivals Man City in a league match, but he has still managed 16 goals in 33 appearances in the Premier League as United have been champions elect for most of the term. But by and large it has been a forgettable season for Rooney.
So will United sell Wayne Rooney in the summer? If so, where too? There may be an option to cash in instead of upping his £200,000 per week contract. There is little doubt that Rooney would be sold off for over £20 million, but who would be willing to stump up that kind of cash? United are shrewd dealers and wouldn’t want him going to any of their rivals like Man City, Arsenal or Chelsea in the Premier League, although the Stamford Bridge outfit would no doubt have the cash to hand over in a bold move, certainly with Fernando Torres not having delivered in his time there. Signing Wayne Rooney would be a big attraction for whoever the next Chelsea manager may be.
Paris St Germain make a viable option as well for Rooney, as they are climbing the ladder into the elite of European club football. Rooney would have to compete with Zlatan Ibrahimovic there, but the Parisians would be interested. They also play the style that would suit Rooney in his favoured forward role, where he is allowed to drop deep and spark things off on the counter attack. There would be many takers for him, although the big Italian clubs wouldn’t really get on the radar because of funds, so how about a move abroad to Spain? Would Rooney fit in at Barcelona? No. How about Real Madrid to be united with former Red Devil Cristiano Ronaldo? That may be more likely, but it is hard to look beyond PSG as the most serious contender for his signature. Rooney moving to any club over the summer would fetch a price of around 7/4.
