February’s New Zealand v England ODI cricket series, a three match series, starts on the 17th, and will see the following two matches played on the 20th and the 23rd. All are day/night affairs and with the sides looking fairly balanced in the short Twenty20 series, things really could swing either way here. England though will be favourites though, as they are the second highest ranked side in the world in the ODI format. That is hard to argue with, especially with England beating top ranked side India 3-2 in a recent One Day International series in January. While that win on the subcontinent, on the back of a tremendous Test Series win against India, will have filled the English with confidence, there can be no let up from England as they prepare to take on Australia in the 2013 Ashes series later on the year.
While The England Cricket Team will ride into the three match series as favourites, looking back over their recent form against the Black Caps, it hasn't been great. The last meeting between the two nations was back in 2009 in Johannesburg, which england lost by a hefty four wickets. In the last twelve One Day Internationals between England and New Zealand, England have won just two matches. So not only do they have to deal with conditions favouring New Zealand, the tourists will have to overcome some history as well. The last time that England were in New Zealand and facing a ODI series, was back in 2008. Things didn’t go well on that occasion for England either as they lost 3-1 in the series (one tied match). They squared up again back on English soil that year too for a five match series and England lost that 3-1 again.
So do the Kiwis have something over the English in this department. Well, you really have to put into context the fact that those matches were quite a while ago and England have improved dramatically in all formats of the game since then. Some positives to look at perhaps for England, is that two of the three grounds that they will visit for the ODI series against New Zealand, they were undefeated on at their last appearances there (Auckland and Napier). The overall ODI head to head between England and New Zealand is fairly even. There have been 592 matches played, with England winning 288 and the Black Caps taking 277 wins. So very little to chose between the two sides really.
So while England are the away side, you have to put their chances in context to how New Zealand have been performing recently in their ODI matches. It hasn’t been great, but recent results show that this could really be a close series. New Zealand have won just two of their last nine ODI’s, but those two came in their last three matches, both against the powerful South African side. This is only a three matches series and naturally a 2-1 result is going to be the favourite in Series betting. Which way to swing though? England go in perhaps as slight favourite, but the Kiwis have their own strengths on home soil.
