The 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup series is now into its 65th season, and it all kicked off in mid February at the famous Daytona International Speedway track in Florida. The 2013 Sprint Unlimited where was it all began, being the first exhibition race of the new season of the Sprint Cup and it was Kevin Harvick who laid down the first marker for the season, taking the win ahead of Greg Biffle and Joey Logano. Harvick led for 40 laps of the 75 lap race for Richard Childress Racing. Followed by the Budweiser duels in late February, it was all a precursor for the opening of the actual season, the much hyped Daytona 500 in which Danica Patrick became the first ever woman driver to sit on the pole there. The sport couldn't’ have asked for a much better start to the season for that, with Patrick’s qualifying performance putting a lot of noses out of joint in the male dominated sport.
There is a massive 36 races filling the season for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup, with the final event to come in November at the Ford EcoBoost400 in Homestead, Florida. Brad Keselowski is the reigning champion, amassing 2400 points last season, enough to get him the title ahead of close challenges from Clint Boyer and Jimmie Johnson. The title was won in the last race of the season in a thrilling climax. Keselowski in his Dodge, took five wins last season and is one of the front runners for the new season again, having been opened at around odds of 9/1 ahead of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. That was his first win and it could be a tough thing to follow it up. That what the bookmakers are thinking for the new season as they are most concerned about former Sprint Cup winner Jimmie Johnson going all the way again this year, with the Hendrick Motorsports driver, in his Chevrolet going as outright favourite.
Johnson has all the experience and the talent in the world, having won the NASCAR Sprint Cup five times before in his career. He rattled off championship drives for five consecutive season between 2006 and 2010 inclusive and with a third place finish in last year’s standings, it is highly probable that he will go very close again. The other two main front runners for the 2013 season are Denny Hamlin and Kasey Kahne. Both recorded top six finishes in the championship last season, Kahne taking fourth and Hamlin taking sixth. It was Hamlin who recorded the more wins for the season, taking five compared to Kahne’s two and both look as if a step up to the Sprint Cup title won’t be far away. Kahne goes for Hendrick Motorsports along with Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Hamlin races for Joe Gibbs Racing alongside Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch.
There are some big names in there who will be expected to challenge, Kyle Busch and Kenseth make up for a powerful team alongside Hamlin and they should get enough wins under their belt this season to have title shots as well. Both were showing up well in the preseason 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup betting market. So too the likes of Jeff Gordon, Greg Biffle and Dale Earnhardt Junior. But what of the presence of Danica Patrick, who opened the season with a tremendous pole position at the Daytona 500? Does anyone see the Stewart-Haas Racing driver as a real contender for the 2013 Sprint Cup? The bookmakers didn’t seem to think so, not over the course of such a long and demanding season, placing Patrick as the rank outsider of all drivers in this 2013 championship, at around odds of 300/1.
