The Prix d'Amerique is a harness race that takes place at the Vincennes hippodrome in Paris, France on the last Sunday of January. It dates back to 1920 and is generally regarded as the most prestigious harness race anywhere in the world. The race now receives media coverage on three continents and in thirty countries with millions of viewers. The race now offers a prize purse of one million Euros.
The Prix d’Amerique betting 2013 is dominated by Ready Cash who will be seeking to win it for the third year running. Last year, the stallion by Indy de Vive beat the mare Roxane Griff in a mile rate time of 1:56 for the 2,700 metre race (1.67 miles). Ready Cash was driven by Franck Nivard who started him on the wide outside of the 18-runner field as Timoko took them along. The field stacked up in three tiers, with Ready Cash and Maharajah in the outer tier but close up.
Coming out of the last turn, Maharajah and Orjan Kihlstrom trotted up to challenge but could not withstand the late acceleration of Ready Cash. Roxane Griff, driven by Eric Raffin, finished second with The Best Madrik (Jean-Etienne Dubois) third and Maharajah back in fourth. The early pacesetter, Timoko, eventually finished fifth.
The first five horses in the 2012 event are set to meet again this year and Ready Cash is an even money chance to complete the hat-trick after producing another victory in the Prix de Bourgogne at Paris-Vincennes on New year’s day. Nivard drove him ahead early in the 2,100 metre event and had plenty in hand of runner-up Main Wise As in a mile rate of 1:53.3. The winning time was a new stakes record. The last test race for the Prix d’Amerique is the Prix de Belgique where last year’s winner Royal Dream is expected to line up. He is currently a 7-1 chance for the Prix d’Amerique and will be looking to boost his claims with victory in his trial.
Royal Dream defeated Ready Cash in the Prix de Belgique last season, denying the favourite the opportunity of winning all four pretests ahead of the Prix d’Amerique, a record held by the great Ourasi. He won the Prix d’Amerique four times in five years between 1986 and 1990. Royal Dream is a son of Love You and races without any equipment other than a jogging bridle. The Jean-Philippe Dubois owned Royal Dream claimed victory over the 2,850 metre distance at a mile rate of 1:58. Ready Cash had looked set for another victory when challenging before the home turn but could not hold off Royal Dream in the last 50 metres.
Roxane Griff also finished well that day and grabbed Ready Cash on the line to take second. She is a 14-1 chance in the betting lists. Maharajah has been prepared for the big race with an easy start in Sweden winning his fourth consecutive start. He was timed in a mile rate of 1:59 over 2,140 metres and will continue his preparation in his homeland until the big race. He is believed to be the biggest threat to the favourite this year and is currently trading at around 4-1. Timoko is 20-1 with Main Wise As on 25-1 along with The Best Madrik.
